Medtech and software: fertile ground for SMEs – The sector continues to show strong momentum, driven by the growing need for connected medical devices, AI-based solutions, and digital tools for both healthcare professionals and institutions.

“The rationale behind our focus on healthcare software lies in the need to contain system-wide costs while improving care delivery and helping to better organise professional practice.”

Since its launch in 2014, Extens has evolved from a growth equity specialist into one of the few LBO funds dedicated exclusively to healthcare software.

In recent months, the firm has taken a significant step with its third fund, completing its first international transaction by acquiring a majority stake in Dutch EHR software provider Medicore (Deal of the Month – Private Equity Magazine no. 199). On 11 December 2024, Extens also announced the sale of Teranga – a specialist in software for elderly care institutions – to Orisha, a platform backed by TA Associates and Francisco Partners. This is Extens’s second exit to Orisha in less than six months, following the sale of Must Informatique earlier in the summer.

“The emergence of consolidation platforms such as Orisha, Arche (backed by Activa and Turenne), or Dedalus (in Ardian’s portfolio) – most of them supported by private equity investors – has helped the market mature and scale. This, in turn, is fuelling a strong wave of upstream innovation, which sits ahead of our positioning. We're now addressing needs that didn’t even exist ten years ago – notably around patient journey optimisation. Coordinating hospital, primary care, and specialist settings has become essential. AI also plays a growing role, helping to solve critical challenges such as emergency flow management or stock optimisation.”

Today, Extens focuses its investments across six verticals: hospital IT, outpatient care IT, homecare software, pharmaceutical and life sciences IT, workplace health and quality of life platforms, and horizontal business software.
